Sylhet: India Women’s Cricket Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has indicated that less experienced players will be given more chances to play in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022, starting here on Saturday. The team is preparing for the T20 World Cup to be held early next year. D Hemlata and Kiran Navagire were tried in the last series in England but could not make an impact.
Jemima Rodrigues has recovered from a wrist injury that ruled her out of the series against England and is expected to play as an opener against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Opener Shafali Verma will also be eyeing after a disappointing performance in England. The team, however, will enter the tournament with increased confidence after beating England 3-0 in the ODI series.
Harmanpreet said, “There are a lot of T20 matches to play before the World Cup. Players who have not got enough chances can get a chance to play in the match before the World Cup. There are many areas we can work on. We are going to see if someone else can get a chance in the first six overs and the players can be tried in the middle overs and death overs as well.

“In bowling also we need to try for the right team combination. Jemima is fine, she batted in the nets today.” The T20 World Cup will be played in South Africa in February next year. Harmanpreet also backed 18-year-old Shefali for her return to form.
“She is doing really well in the nets. Sometimes you can’t replicate that form during a match. You need to spend some time at the crease and I am sure she will regain her form. The Asia Cup will be a great platform for that.”
“We will try to give him enough matches to get his confidence back,” said the Indian captain. Harmanpreet herself has been in excellent form and played a memorable innings of 143 not out in 111 balls in England. The Indian skipper said that she is enjoying the added responsibility of leading the team. On the memorable series win in England, he said the team’s long-term plans are finally paying off. (agency)
