Amritpal Singh case
Internet services have been suspended in the state since March 18 as part of the crackdown initiated against Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistan supporter and chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ in Punjab. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has issued new orders regarding the Internet. According to the new order, internet service will be restored in some districts of Punjab from 12 noon today. However, internet will remain closed till March 23 in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Sangrur, Mohali and Sub Division Ajnala.
Internet shutdown in the interest of public safety
The order issued by the Punjab government states that all mobile internet, all SMS services (except banking and mobile recharge) and all services provided on mobile networks in the districts of Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Sangrur, sub-division Ajnala have been suspended. Dongle services, (except voice calls) will remain suspended. It has also been decided to shut down internet in the interest of public safety till March 23 (12:00 hrs) in SAS Nagar adjacent to both YPS Chowk and Airport Road in Amritsar.
Action against Amritpal Singh continues
It may be noted that Internet services were suspended across the state for the last three days citing the ongoing campaign for Amritpal Singh and maintenance of peace in Punjab. The Punjab Police is continuously making efforts to arrest Amritpal Singh, the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization. Along with this, the police is continuously cracking down on his supporters as well.
