Congress Presidential Election: Senior party leader M Mallikarjun Kharge will not hesitate to contest for the post of All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, if Congress President Sonia Gandhi says so. A source close to the senior leader said this on Wednesday. The name of Kharge, a former Union minister and a trusted lieutenant of the Nehru-Gandhi family, is in the news for the election to the post of AICC President to be held on October 17. The nomination process for this election will continue till September 30.

Whatever decision the party takes, will follow it.

“Kharge has told Sonia Gandhi that whatever decision the party takes, he will abide by it,” said a close aide of the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. “Ultimately, he will do what the party (Sonia Gandhi) tells him to do,” the source said. A Congress leader said Kharge has a “good association and relationship” with opposition leaders like Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar and CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury which will be an “additional advantage” and he is “sharp as ever”. There are also tarars”.

It’s a big job to take the party forward.

Another leader said, “Even in Hindi-speaking areas, people like him for his Hindi.” Sources close to Kharge (80), however, also said that they believe that only the Nehru-Gandhi family has “unknown charm and charisma” and that no one else in the entire country has that kind of influence. Sources said Kharge, who has been advocating for the return of Rahul Gandhi as Congress president, believes that the Lok Sabha elections are just two years away and it is a “huge task” to tour the country and take the party forward. The close aide said, “He (Kharge) did not deny anything said by the party. The party took care of him, whatever the party decides, he will accept it.
