    What is e-fuel and how useful will it be in the future?

    New EU law proposes to ban the sale of all vehicles powered by internal combustion engines after 2035.

    New EU law proposes to ban the sale of all vehicles powered by internal combustion engines after 2035. EU regulations require all new cars sold from 2035 to have zero CO2 emissions, making it effectively impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered cars.

    The law also states that only new vehicles that can be converted to e-fuel after a specified time limit should be sold.

    According to the European Union, after 2035 only vehicles that do not emit carbon dioxide should be allowed to be sold, which means that the sale of conventional fuel vehicles in the block will be impossible.

    Germany has supported this route along with other European countries, but says the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines should not be banned. However, new EU legislation is punishing the technology with the death penalty, as the engine of any such vehicle with an internal combustion engine cannot run without emitting carbon dioxide.

    What is e-fuel?

    While synthetic e-fuels have taken years to produce, they are now being promoted as a climate-friendly alternative to oil-powered cars and trucks. These fuels use green hydrogen produced from water and renewable electricity. It is mixed with CO2 to make synthetic fuel like diesel, gasoline or kerosene.

    When fuel is used in a normal engine, carbon dioxide is produced. However, the concept is that these vehicles generate as much carbon dioxide as is taken from the air to produce the fuel. In this way, the total amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will remain neutral.

    Germany and Italy are of the opinion that even after 2035, the sale of such vehicles should be allowed, which run on CO2 neutral fuel.

    Battery-powered e-cars are increasingly being used to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from passenger vehicles. The technology now used by almost all automakers is being defended as well as manufactured and sold. These automakers are not in favor of heavy batteries.

    Although e-fuel is not yet being produced on a large scale, the first plant in this regard was started in Chile in 2021. Together with Germany’s technology leader Siemens Energy, Porsche wants to create a carbon-neutral e-fuel with the help of low-cost wind power.

    With the support of Porsche, the target is to produce 5.5 lakh liters of e-fuel through this plant.

    Proponents of e-fuels say that existing vehicles will continue to use fossil fuels and will not have to rely on electric vehicles. However, critics of this fuel say that the production of e-fuel is very expensive and it consumes a huge amount of energy.

    According to a study conducted by the German Energy Agency, the consumption of vehicles running on e-fuel is five times more than battery-powered electric vehicles. In future, the journey per kilometer from them will be about eight times more expensive.
