Uttar Pradesh: A female banker in Lucknow was duped of Rs 73,000 by a cyber thug who had lured her as a ‘prospective groom’ on a matrimonial site. At the age of 40, the woman met a man on a matrimonial site who introduced himself as Sonu Singh, a resident of New York.

In the FIR, she alleged that, “They used to talk to each other over the phone and within a month they became good friends and agreed to marry each other.” In her complaint, the victim said, “He said that he is sending the jewelery for the engagement ceremony through a courier service. He has also shared the pictures of the jewelery on WhatsApp.”

The woman further added, “Later, a lady from the courier company called me and said that you have to pay Rs 73,000 to receive the packet. I transferred the money but the packet was not received. Later, Singh said Also switched off my phone, I thought we would get married so I paid.” Gomti Nagar Extension police station in-charge Anil Kumar Singh said that on the basis of the complaint of the victim, an FIR has been registered on charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating and dishonesty.

Police station in-charge Anil Kumar Singh further said, “We will take the help of cyber cell to investigate the matter.” Cyber cell officials claimed that the methodology suggests that the fraud appears to be the handiwork of a Nigerian gang, who had earlier duped a retired HAL engineer of Rs 8 lakh posing as a German girl. Another woman entrepreneur was also duped of Rs 1.36 lakh by a miscreant and trapped her by sending a friend request on Instagram.
