Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Tamil Nadu Police told the Supreme Court that the makers of the film The Kerala Story have deliberately given a misleading statement that the state government has imposed a pseudo-ban on the screening of the film. Police said that despite protests and objections from Muslim organizationsThe film released in 19 theatersbut was pulled due to poor response.
The Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) in his affidavit said: Driven by malafides and in an attempt to gain publicity, the petitioners have made the allegation that it has been banned, while Tamil Nadu is discharging its positive obligation to release the film. Screening can be done. The screening of the film was stopped due to poor response from the audience and there is nothing the government can do about it.
The state police argued that multiplex owners stopped its screening, citing poor box office collections due to the absence of any popular stars in the film. It asserted that the state does not exercise any control and the decision rests with the theater owners and the state has no role to play in it.
The police insisted that theater owners across the state were allowed to screen the film on May 5, despite protests by some Muslim organisations. On the apex court’s notice on filmmaker’s plea against shadow ban, police said the petitioners have not produced a single document or evidence to show that Tamil Nadu has banned the film’s release.
The affidavit states that the police had deployed over 965 police personnel, including 25 DSPs, for the security of the 21 cinema halls which screened the film. The apex court had on May 12 sought the response of the West Bengal and Tamil Nadu governments as to why the film The Kerala Story, which is running smoothly across the country, cannot be screened in their states.
