Auckland: Shikhar Dhawan has a lot of faith in God and that is the reason why he was not hurt when KL Rahul was handed over the captaincy in his place during the tour of Zimbabwe. Dhawan, who usually leads the ODI side in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, was appointed captain for the three ODIs in the tour of Zimbabwe in August this year but was handed over to him by the former national selection committee after KL Rahul was fit. “I was not hurt because some things are predetermined and whatever happens is for our good,” Dhawan said on the eve of the first ODI against New Zealand. He said, “And if you see after the Zimbabwe tour, I was made the captain again for the series against South Africa and the same selection committee gave me that responsibility. That’s why I was not saddened in the slightest by what happened in Zimbabwe. Whatever God does, He does for the good.”

Dhawan said, “I consider myself fortunate that at this stage of my career, I have got the opportunity to captain India.” He also talked about the reasons behind handing over the captaincy to Rahul in the Zimbabwe tour. Dhawan said, “Rahul was made captain in Zimbabwe because he is the vice-captain of the main team. He was supposed to play in the Asia Cup after that series and if Rohit got injured, Rahul was to take over the captaincy. So it was better that he should captain in Zimbabwe. So in this perspective it was the right decision.”

Dhawan has so far played 161 ODIs in which he has scored 6672 runs. He will turn 37 on December 5 and knows there is little room for error as far as he is concerned. He said that playing only one format has always prepared him for the challenges of international cricket.

“It completely depends on the individual. I consider it God’s grace that I am playing only one format. This helps me to complete my other works. I am fresher and stronger than when I used to play all three formats.

Dhawan knows that once Rohit and Rahul return, the competition at the top of the order will increase and apart from them, Shubman Gill will also be a contender for the opener. He said, “Now many players are representing India in all three formats and it is a good thing. Playing one format has its own challenges but I keep myself prepared.” (agency )
