According to sources, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved senior party leader Shashi Tharoor to contest for the post of party president. Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi in Delhi today. During the meeting, he told Sonia Gandhi that he can strengthen internal democracy.

    According to sources, Congress President Sonia Gandhi replied that if she (Shashi Tharoor) wants to contest for the post of party president, anyone can contest. However, Shashi Tharoor has not yet clarified in what context he met Sonia Gandhi. At the same time, whether Shashi Tharoor wants to contest for the post of Congress President or not, it will be his personal decision.

    Nobody needs anyone’s permission – Jairam

    Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Whoever wants to contest for the post of Congress President is free and you are welcome to do so. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have consistently held this post. This is an open one.” It is a democratic and transparent process. No one needs anyone’s permission to contest elections.”

    Support for posts demanding reforms in Congress

    It is noteworthy that Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi today at a time when she has recently indicated that she may contest for the post of President. At the same time, hours before meeting Sonia Gandhi, Tharoor tweeted supporting a post demanding reforms in the Congress. He said that every candidate for the post of President should take a pledge that if elected, he will fully implement the ‘Udaipur Navsankalp’.

    Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, took to Twitter to support a petition by the party’s youth workers seeking reforms. Regarding the online petition of party workers, Shashi Tharoor tweeted, “I welcome this petition, which is being circulated by a group of young members of Congress seeking constructive reforms in the party. It has collected more than 650 signatures so far. I am happy to support this and move forward.

    Demand for making Rahul Gandhi the president again intensifies

    On the other hand, as the election for the post of Congress President is approaching, the demand for Rahul Gandhi to be made the President once again within the party has intensified. In the same sequence, on Monday also eight local units of the party, including seven state Congress committees, passed resolutions in support of Rahul Gandhi. These resolutions were passed by these Congress units after Rahul Gandhi had indicated in Kanyakumari on September 9 that he stood by his old decision to become the party’s president.

    Notably, the notification for the election of the Congress President will be issued on September 22 and the process of filing nominations will continue from September 24 to 30. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 08. Voting will be held on October 17 if there is more than one candidate. The results will be declared on October 19.
