Manoj Rathi, the sole distributor of the film in Nepal, said screenings have been stopped across the country.
On June 15, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah directed cinema halls in the Nepalese capital not to allow screening of the film until the makers correct the mistake of Sita’s birthplace.
Citing Articles 5 and 56(6) of the Constitution of Nepal, Shah said that the federal, provincial and local governments have the responsibility to protect the national interest and Nepal’s decision to allow the screening of the film without any changes is a matter of concern. Nationality, cultural unity and national identity can be irreparably damaged.
A day after the Mayor’s warning, all cinemas in Kathmandu stopped screening Adipurush for security reasons.
The mayor on Sunday called off his protest against the film and urged cinema halls not to screen the film till the filmmakers rectify the alleged mistake.
The Censor Board of Nepal has also decided to withdraw the permission to screen the film.
Bhaskar Dhungana, vice-chairman of the Nepal Film Union, said, “We have decided to call off the screening of the film due to security reasons.”
According to the Ramayana, Sita was born in Janakpur, which falls in Nepal, and was married by Lord Rama.
