Mehbooba Mufti Appeals: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to release Altaf Shah, who is suffering from kidney cancer, on humanitarian grounds. Altaf Shah is the son-in-law of late separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani. He was arrested in 2017 along with six others in a terrorism financing case. He is presently admitted in the Medical Unit (ICU) of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML) in Delhi. Mehbooba tweeted, “It is inhuman to keep Altaf Shah in captivity as he is seriously ill. I request the Union Home Minister to release her on humanitarian grounds, so that she can be with her family in this difficult time.

The PDP chief made this comment on a tweet by Altaf Shah’s daughter Rua Shah. Rua had tweeted last night, “My father has been diagnosed with kidney cancer and it is spreading to other parts of the body including his bones. On behalf of my entire family, we request that we be allowed to meet him and his bail application be considered on health grounds.

Rua has tagged the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister in his tweet. Rua further added, “He (Altaf Shah) is currently on oxygen in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of RML, which does not have a cancer department. My 66-year-old father is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail as a political prisoner for the last five years.
