Wellington: New Zealand Cricket has released veteran batsman Martin Guptill from his central contract, giving the cricketer a chance to play overseas. Guptill was not able to make it to the limited overs team recently. The 36-year-old is the third cricketer to be released from a central contract.
Prior to that, Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme were also released from central contracts by New Zealand Cricket. All these three players took this decision to explore opportunities in overseas T20 leagues. New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said on Wednesday, “We are aware of Martin’s position.” He has been our best batsman for a long time. He now wants to explore other opportunities and we do not want to stand in his way.”
