London: Jhulan Goslami, who has become synonymous with fast bowling in women’s cricket, will play the last match of her career at Lord’s on Saturday, when the Indian team will play three matches against England (India Women vs England Women). Will try to give a memorable farewell to this legendary player by making a clean sweep of 3-0 in the ODI cricket series.

Playing cricket at Lord’s is the dream of any player and scoring a century or taking five wickets at this ground is considered a big achievement but very few players get a chance to say goodbye to their cricketing career at this historic ground.

Sunil Gavaskar (though he played his last first-class match here) did not get this opportunity. Be it Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara or Glenn McGrath, nobody got a chance to play their last match at Lord’s. Even Mithali Raj, who was Jhulan’s partner for almost 20 years, did not get an opportunity to say goodbye to her career on the cricket field but see the fortunes that Goswami is going to play her last match at Lord’s. India have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series but Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates will leave no stone unturned to give a memorable farewell to Jhulan with a clean sweep.

India did well in every department of the game in the first two matches against England and will look to maintain that momentum. The biggest advantage for India is that captain Harmanpreet has returned to her old rhythm. He scored an unbeaten 74 and an unbeaten 143 in the first two matches. For India, however, the form of Shefali is a matter of concern, which has been struggling to score runs for some time now. Harleen Deol has cemented her place in the middle order but fast bowlers Meghna Singh, Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar will have to refine their game after Jhulan retires.

As far as England is concerned, they are missing captain Heather Knight (due to injury) and star all-rounder Nat Sciver (due to mental health reasons) and this has also thrown the balance of the team. India last won an ODI series in England in 1999 while Jhulan did not even make his international debut. Now he is ready to play his 204th and last match. He has a record 353 international wickets to his name. The cricketer from Chakda, a small town in West Bengal, has been leading the Indian attack for the past 20 years. She has become the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

Shefali Verma and Richa Ghosh were not even born when Jhulan first played for India and Jemima Rodrigues would probably have played in the dock. Even Harmanpreet Kaur was dreaming of becoming a cricketer then. And now that she is retiring, Harmanpreet is her captain and Shefali, Jemima, Richa and Yastika Bhatia are her teammates. Now there are plans to start Indian Premier League for women, women have central contracts and they get enough money but when Jhulan started her career she had to face lot of struggles. But she did not give up and by continuously improving her game, reached the pinnacle of women’s cricket. Therefore, it is certain that the Indian team will not take any laxity on their part in making a 3-0 clean sweep in the series to give a memorable farewell to such a player.

    The teams are as follows:

India: Harmanpreet Kaur (Captain), Smriti Mandhana, Shefali Verma, Sabineni Meghna, Deepti Sharma, Yastika Bhatia (WK), Pooja Vastrakar, Sneh Rana, Renuka Thakur, Meghna Singh, Rajeshwari Gaikwad, Harleen Deol, Dayalan Hemlata, Simran Dil Bahadur, Jhulan Goswami, Tania Bhatia and Jemima Rodrigues.

England: Amy Jones (c & wk), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsi, Kate Cross, Freya Davis, Alice Davidson-Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Freya Kemp, Issie Wong, Danny White. The match will start at 3.30 pm Indian time. (agency)
