G20 Summit: Ahead of India’s assuming the presidency of the G20, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that his country will work with other members of this influential grouping to address serious issues of debt, food and energy security and the environment. The G-20 grouping is a forum of developed and developing economies of the world. India will assume the presidency of the G20 from December 01, 2022 to November 30, 2023. During his presidency, India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings across the country from December 2022.

The G20 Leaders’ Conference at the Head of State level is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 9-10, 2023. “We are starting the G20 presidency in December this year and we are sensitive to the challenges facing developing countries,” Jaishankar said in his address at the high-level UN General Assembly session here on Saturday.

Reform will remain one of our core priorities: External Affairs Minister

He told the 193-member UN General Assembly that India would work closely with other members of the G20 to address serious issues of debt, economic growth, food and energy security, and especially the environment. “Improving the functioning of this multilateral financial organization will continue to be one of our core priorities,” he said. Jaishankar also said that the Indo-Pacific region also has new concerns about its stability and security. His remarks come amid China’s aggressive actions in the strategically important region.

He said that although the world’s attention is focused on Ukraine, India has faced other challenges, especially in its neighbourhood. Indirectly, he was referring to the still unresolved standoff with China in eastern Ladakh and strained relations with Pakistan. “While some of those challenges may have been exacerbated by the COVID pandemic and the current conflicts, it speaks volumes of difficulties. Indebtedness in a weak economy is also a cause for particular concern,” he said.

‘The international community must rise above the narrow national agenda’

Jaishankar said that India believes that in such times the international community should rise above the narrow national agenda. He said that India on its part is taking extraordinary steps in this extraordinary period. “When we bridge the gap in human needs, the political complexities remain unresolved,” he said. He said India sent 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat and several consignments of medicines and vaccines to Afghanistan. Also, gave a loan of $ 3.8 billion to Sri Lanka for fuel, essential commodities etc., provided food aid and vaccines of 10,000 metric tons to Myanmar.

“Whether it is disaster relief or humanitarian aid, India has stood firm, especially in helping its immediate neighbours,” the External Affairs Minister said. The G20 includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union.
