Mirpur. Shakibul Hasan’s five-wicket haul and then all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraj’s (38 not out) thrashed India by one wicket in the first ODI here on Sunday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match cricket series. Bangladesh lost their ninth wicket in the 40th over in the form of Hasan Mahmood (0) for 136 runs but the Indian team could not take the last wicket in the next six overs. In this, the 51-run partnership for the last wicket between Mehdi Hasan (39 balls, four fours, two sixes) and Mustafizur Rahman (10 not out) played an important role.
Shakib (5/36) took five wickets as Bangladesh bundled out India for 186 in 41.2 overs despite a fighting half-century from Lokesh Rahul (73). But the Indian bowlers, performing well, had taken nine wickets for 136 runs in the 40th over, otherwise the Indian team would have lost the match earlier. After this, India’s hopes of victory were raised, but in this match Rahul, who took over the responsibility of wicketkeeping, and experienced Shikhar Dhawan dropped catches, then Bangladesh needed 32 runs to win.

Washington Sundar also could not take a simple catch at third man, due to which Miraj and Mustafizur took the team to the target in 46 overs to win. Indian bowlers Mohammad Siraj (three wickets for 32 runs), Shardul Thakur (one wicket for 21 runs) and Sundar (two wickets for 17 runs) made this easy score big for Bangladesh with a brilliant effort. Kuldeep Sen, making his debut, took two wickets for 37 runs. Deepak Chahar (1/32) got the wicket with the first ball but didn’t look very effective in the end.
Earlier, apart from Shakib, Ibadat Hussain also took four wickets for 47 runs, due to which the Indian team returned to the pavilion in 41.2 overs. The wicket was aided by both pacers and spinners, with Rahul hitting five fours and four sixes in his 70-ball 73 but the rest of India’s batsmen struggled to score runs. Apart from him, only captain Rohit Sharma (27) and Shreyas Iyer (24) could cross the 20-run mark.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh decided to bowl first after which Mustafizur Rahman bowled the first over maiden. Rohit opened India’s boundary account with a four off Hasan Mahmood. Bangladesh captain Liton Das handed the ball to the spinner in the fourth over itself. Off-spinner Mehdi Hasan Miraj bowled opener Shikhar Dhawan (07), making an impressive start. In an attempt to reverse sweep the ball of Mehidy Hasan, Dhawan played on the wickets. Rohit hit Mahmood for his first six of the innings over deep square leg.

The Indian skipper also hit Mehidy Hasan with a sweep over deep square leg. Virat Kohli also showed Mehdi Hasan’s ball to the boundary. Liton then changed the bowling and handed the ball to the experienced Shakib. Shakib bowled Rohit, not disappointing his captain. After two balls, Liton gave India the third blow by taking a brilliant catch of Kohli (09) on the ball of left-arm spinner Shakib, which made India’s score 49 for three in the 11th over. Rahul and Shreyas then tried to mend the innings. Ibadat, however, ended the 43-run partnership for the fourth wicket by getting Shreyas caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim on a short-pitched ball. Rahul then shared a 60-run partnership with Washington Sundar (19).
After completing Rahul’s half-century, Washington was caught by Ibadat in an attempt to play a reverse sweep off Shakib. Ibadat dismissed Shahbaz Ahmed (00) in the next over while Shakib ended the innings of Shardul Thakur (02) and Deepak Chahar (00) as India were reduced to 156 for eight. Rahul then played a short ball from Ibadat to Anamul Haque at fine leg and then the fast bowler dismissed Mohammad Siraj (09) to end India’s innings.
