New Delhi. Wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson is likely to be named as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the three-match ODI series against South Africa. Whereas, many senior players are expected to be rested in view of the ICC T20 World Cup to be held next month.
India will take on South Africa in a three-match T20I series, which will be followed by a three-match ODI series from October 6 to 11. The Indian squad for the T20I series has already been announced and the Indian selectors are likely to finalize the squad for the ODI series in the next few days.
According to BCCI sources, Sanju Samson could be made the vice-captain of the Indian team for the three-match ODI series, while Shikhar Dhawan is likely to be the captain of the team. At the same time, most of the senior players are likely to be rested for the ICC T20 World Cup.
Significantly, the 27-year-old Sanju Samson was part of the ODI series against Zimbabwe which India won 3-0. He has represented India in seven ODIs and 16 T20 Internationals so far. Samson is currently captaining India A against New Zealand A at home.
Sources said the batsman could make his ODI debut against Rajat Patidar’s South Africa.

The first T20I against South Africa will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on 28 September. While, the second T20I will be played on October 2 in Guwahati, the last T20I match will be played in Indore on October 4.
The first ODI after the T20 series will be played in Lucknow on 6 October. Ranchi and Delhi will host the second and third ODIs on 9 and 11 October respectively.
