ICC: The names of the new office bearers of the ICC have been announced. Greg Barclay of New Zealand was re-elected as the chairman of the ICC on Saturday. Berkeley has been unanimously given a second term. Barclay’s term will be for two years. In fact, Zimbabwe’s Tawengwa Mukuhlani withdrew, after which Barkley was elected unopposed. Greg Barkley was made the ICC chairman in November 2020. He was previously the Chamberman of New Zealand Cricket and the Director of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2015. He was elected unopposed, which means he also had the support of the BCCI in the 17-member board.
Jai Shah got important responsibility
At the board meeting, BCCI secretary Jay Shah was elected as the head of the ICC’s finance and commercial affairs committee. Let us tell you that Jay Shah has been entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the most important committee of the ICC. Apart from the ICC chairman, it is an equally powerful sub-committee. The finance and commercial affairs committee is always headed by an ICC board member and Shah’s election makes it clear that he will represent the BCCI on the ICC board. According to PTI, each member accepted Jay Shah as the head of the finance and commercial affairs committee.
What does this committee do?
This committee makes all major financial policy decisions, which are ratified by the ICC Board of approval. The work of this committee involves sharing of revenue among the member countries. During N Srinivasan’s era, the post of head of this committee used to be with India but later the BCCI’s power was reduced. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, however, was a member of this committee till last year. “India is the commercial hub of global cricket and more than 70 per cent of sponsorships come from this region,” an ICC source said. It is therefore necessary that the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee of the ICC should always be chaired by the BCCI itself.
