Anyhow, a bit of hue and cry about the film starts a positive buzz about it. Adipurush, one of the many films based on the Indian mythological epic Ramayana, is written and directed by Om Raut. It is manufactured by T-Series and Retrophiles. It was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu. It is set in a modern backdrop but luckily the epic story hasn’t been tampered with much. In this film of less than three hours and a minute, computer generated graphics have been used extensively, which also interfere with the story, but this is not its only mistake.
The film begins with the 14 years of exile demanded by King Dasharatha, the father of Prince Rama, by his stepmother Kaikeyi. The story focuses on his journey through the forests with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Soon, the scene of Sita’s abduction by Ravana, the king of Lanka, ensues, and a battle ensues between Rama and Ravana. There have been numerous versions of mythological stories, told with gusto, each one aimed at a new perspective and that’s why these stories mostly become hits in the new perspective. The producers and directors know they have to make a perfect adaptation.
This version of Ramayana cannot be faulted to some extent, as neither it is a mythological theme nor any of the characters are real. The acting of Prabhas, who played the role of Ram, was tremendous. The rest of the fictional roles were either hyper-sensitive or with deadpan expressions. Saif Ali Khan appeared in the role of Ravana. With the help of technology, an attempt was made to make him appear larger than a five feet frame, thereby elevating his character of Ravana above all other characters. Ram’s voice, which is half of the performance, has been dubbed by Sharad Kelkar to appeal to the North Indian Hindi-speaking audience.
Kriti Sanon as Janaki in the film seemed unsure of what to do; His tall stature and expressionless face are distracting. These are the same pieces that were so impressive at Mimi last year. The divinity that one looks for in such films is missing. Several elaborate visuals were employed to heighten the shock and awe effect, but sadly, no one was intimidated by the artificial glow. Cinematographer Karthik Palani heavily used colors in the film, especially black and blue, to create a sense of dazzle and wonder in the audience watching the film.
The songs by Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara, and Sanchit and Ankit Balhara’s background score are expectedly loud, sound pollution in place of music.
