These days you must be hearing a lot of discussions about monsoon. With the onset of monsoon, the process of rain begins. In such a situation, if someone asks you how rain occurs, what will be your answer? Many such questions keep coming to our mind, so let us tell you today in simple language how rain occurs and what is its process?

      1. There are three forms of water on earth- steam, liquid water and solid ice. When water is heated, it turns into steam or gas and rises in the air. When such steam accumulates in large quantities, it takes the form of clouds. This entire process is called evaporation.

      1. As water vapor rises into the atmosphere it cools and condenses into water droplets or ice crystals. These droplets form clouds.

      1. Water droplets in the air gather together around tiny particles such as dust, pollutants, or ice nuclei, forming larger droplets within clouds.

      1. When water droplets within clouds become large enough, they fall from the clouds as rain.

      1. Precipitation can take various forms, such as rain, snow, sleet or hail, depending on the temperature and atmospheric conditions.

      1. Rain is the most common form. It occurs when the temperature in the atmosphere is above zero and water droplets fall to the Earth’s surface in the form of liquid raindrops.

      1. When rain falls on the Earth’s surface, it can take two paths. Some of the water becomes runoff, flowing off the land surface into rivers, streams, and eventually into oceans or other water bodies. The rest of the water can infiltrate into the ground, replenishing groundwater reserves, or be absorbed by plants.

      1. The water that becomes runoff collects in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, forming a part of the Earth’s freshwater resources. It can also seep into the ground, contributing to groundwater reserves.

      1. This cycle continues as water evaporates from surface bodies, vegetation, and the ground and returns to the atmosphere, starting the process again.

      1. This cyclic process of evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff helps maintain the Earth’s water balance and plays a vital role in the distribution of water across different regions of the planet.
