New Delhi: Former Australian wicket-keeper batsman Brad Haddin has joined Punjab Kings as an assistant coach ahead of the 2023 Indian Premier League. The Punjab-based franchise added 44-year-old Haddin to the team after World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss was appointed as the new head coach in place of legendary Indian Anil Kumble.

Haddin and Bayliss were both at Sunrisers Hyderabad as well. Haddin has played 66 Tests, 126 ODIs and 34 T20Is for Australia. An Indian Premier League (IPL) source told PTI on Thursday, “Haddin has been appointed as the assistant coach. Soon the rest of the support staff will also be appointed.

Apart from Kumble, the team also did not extend the contracts of assistant coach Jonty Rhodes and bowling coach Damien Wright. Rhodes played with the Punjab team before the 2020 edition, while Wright came a year later. The team has also failed to make it to the playoffs in the last three seasons, so the management decided not to extend Kumble’s contract and also parted ways with the support staff members.

The Punjab team are looking to win their maiden IPL title under the guidance of Bayliss who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two titles in 2012 and 2014 under his coaching. (agency)
