THE Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa will launch in February 2023 the translation of the Bible in Cuyonon, the local language used in the town of Cuyo, the oldest town in Palawan where the seed of Christianity was first planted in the province in 1622. This is as part of the province’s year-long celebration of the 400th year of the Christian faith in Palawan that began on August 28 and will end August 2023 in conjunction with the feast of San Agustin, the patron saint of Cuyo. In 1622, Spanish Augustine missionaries colonized the town and converted the native population to Catholicism. Cuyonon had been the language used for communication in the province of Palawan until recently when migration flow into the region rapidly increased. At least 43 percent of the total population of Palawan during the late 1980s spoke and used Cuyonon as a language.
