Melbourne: Star pacer Pat Cummins has been appointed as the new captain of Australia’s One Day International (ODI) team after Aaron Finch retired from the format last month. Cricket Australia has confirmed that the 29-year-old Cummins will lead Australia in next year’s One Day International World Cup in India. Cummins will be Australia’s 27th ODI captain.
He beat Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey in the race for the captaincy. Cummins is the first fast bowler to lead Australia’s men’s team in white-ball cricket. However, CA is yet to announce the vice-captain of the one-day international team.

David Warner’s name was not considered as the life ban imposed on him as captain is still in place. Cricket Australia, however, is considering changes to its code of conduct. Cummins was made the captain of Australia’s Test team last year. Finch will continue to lead the T20 side. Australia will play the next ODI series against England next month which will be of three matches. (agency)
