Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria
Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has said that such a democracy should be built in the country, in which all people participate. Along with this, he said that it is the responsibility of the people’s representatives to make an effective and meaningful democracy. Kataria said this while addressing a seminar organized in the state assembly on Monday.
He said, “The longer the House runs, the better we will be able to keep the public’s point.” Kataria was addressing a seminar on ‘Role of Legislature in Promoting Effective and Meaningful Democracy’ organized under the aegis of Rajasthan branch of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. He said that people have immense loyalty towards democracy in the country.
‘There should be arguments in the house, but no differences’
He said that there should be arguments in the House, but there should not be differences of opinion, otherwise democracy will be weak. He said that he would serve the people of Assam and Rajasthan by staying within the purview of his post and would uphold the honor and dignity of Rajasthan. Kataria was felicitated in the assembly on assuming the responsibility of the post of Governor of Assam.
Kataria was the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly before being appointed as the Governor. On this occasion, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that many governments have changed in India in the last 70 years, but in spite of this, the roots of democracy have become stronger in this country with a population of 140 crores. He said that B. R. India is respected in the world only because of the constitution and strong democracy made by Ambedkar.
‘Important role of both party and opposition in democracy’
He said that it took hundreds of years for women to get the right to vote in many western countries, but our constitution gave women the right to vote from day one, which we all are proud of. Vidhansabha Speaker CP Joshi said that in a democracy both party and opposition have an important role and it is necessary for both the parties to discharge their role effectively.
He said that the quality of debate in the House is important. He said that the government should frame policies in such a way that people’s aspirations can be fulfilled. Amin Khan, MLA from Shiv Vidhan Sabha constituency of Barmer district for the year 2022 and Anita Bhadel, MLA from Ajmer South Vidhan Sabha constituency for the year 2023 were awarded as the best MLA in the programme.
