NDRF jawan Venkatesh NK was traveling in the Coromandel Express at the time of the Balasore train accident, going from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu. Venkatesh NK was on leave. The Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed at around 7 pm on the evening of June 2 near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district. Venkatesh NK was going from Howrah to Chennai in this train.
Venkatesh NK said,I felt a huge jolt and saw some passengers falling in my coach.
I was in third ac coach B7 and my seat number was 58. At the same time the Coromandel Express derailed.
After this Venkatesh NK first informed his senior officers of NDRF. According to the PTI-language report, the officials said that
Venkatesh was the first to inform the NDRF control room on WhatsApp and sent the live location of the accident.
Tracking this live location, NDRF rescue teams reached the accident site.
Venkatesh, a 39-year-old jawan posted with the 2nd Battalion of the NDRF in Kolkata, worked to rescue the people trapped inside the coaches after informing the NDRF control room. He first pulled out the passenger, made him sit in a shop near the railway track and then went ahead to help others.
Talking about helping people, NDRF jawan Venkatesh said,‘I felt a jolt…and then I saw some passengers falling in my coach. I pulled out the first passenger and made him sit in a shop near the railway track… Then I started helping others.
Venkatesh said.I used my mobile phone light to locate the injured and stranded passengers.
I took them to a safe place. It was very dark there. Local people also worked to rescue people using their mobile phones and torches.
Venkatesh said,Whatever I could do, I did.
It took almost an hour for NDRF and Odisha state rescue teams to reach the spot after the accident. During that time many local people along with me saved people. He was the real savior.
