TUGUEGARAO CITY: A stranded juvenile dolphin (Pantropical spotted dolphin) was rescued along the shoreline by a fisherman while he was on his way to fish off Buguey dawn on September 20, a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources report released on Friday said.
Randy Lunato, 45, a local fisherman, spotted the dolphin along the shoreline of Buguey, Cagayan while on his way to go fishing.
Lunato spotted the dolphin half-buried in the sand. He immediately reported the stranded aquatic mammal to the Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries office of LGU-Buguey and to the DA-BFAR 2 Marine Mammal Rescue Team.
Local workers and fishery rescue team workers safely transferred the stranded dolphin to the Buguey Brackish Water Technology Outreach Station located in Barangay Minanga for rehabilitation and recovery.
Dr. Jefferson Soriano, focal person on marine mammal stranding and rescue operation, said that his team already administered appropriate medical procedures to determine the cause of the stranding.
“The juvenile dolphin is still in its weak state until today (September 22). It needs intensive care and regular medical attention because it refuses to eat,” he said.
