The incident took place near Bahanaga Bazar station at around 7.20 pm on Friday when the train was going from Shalimar station near Kolkata to Chennai Central station. After the collision with the goods train, many bids of this train were overturned, the passengers in the coaches of the train fell on top of each other.
As soon as the information about the accident was received, the team of NDRF, local police, railway police reached the spot for the rescue operation. A fire brigade team was sent to take out the people trapped in the train and Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena told that about 60 ambulances were sent, But the number of injured in the train accident was so large that district administration buses were mobilized and sent to take the injured to the hospital.
