BACOLOD CITY: The 94th Infantry Battalion (94IB) recovered a cache of explosives and ammunition at an abandoned camp of the New People’s Army in Sitio Double Yarding, Barangay Mahalang, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Thursday.
Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said that after receiving information from former rebels, soldiers from the 94IB troopers unearthed 10 improvised landmines, composed of eight antipersonnel mines and two antitank explosives, and 1,932 live ammunition for caliber 30 machine gun.
Pasaporte said the cache of explosives and ammunition belonged to the Central Negros 2 members under the Regional Committee Negros/Cebu/Bohol/Siquijor.
People who usually pass by the creek are put in danger of being maimed or killed by an accidental explosion, he said.
With the recovery of improvised explosives and ammunition, Lt. Col. Van Donald Almonte, 94IB commander, said it will save the lives of innocent civilians, aside from government troopers, who may be victimized by the terror activities of the NPA.
Antipersonnel mines are designed against human targets to injure or kill the victims and are capable of damaging light and heavy vehicles.
The anti-tank mines, on the other hand, are designed to destroy or damage heavy vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers.
Pasaporte said the rebels will face charges for violating international war protocols and the Geneva Convention for endangering civilians.
