Digital Desk, Mumbai. Director-cinematographer Abhijeet Achar’s short film Mysore Magic, which depicts the love story of Premi and Vasu in 1982 Mysore, will be screened at the Palm Spring International Festival of Short Films, to be held from June 20 to 26.
The director explained that with this story he focused on the happiness of immigrants as the identity of immigrants is often overlooked.
Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, Abhijeet holds a BA in Film Studies from the University of Georgia. Completed degree. He then pursued an MFA in Media Arts from Emerson College. His thesis film My Indian Rhapsody had its world premiere at the 2017 Atlanta Film Festival.
He has produced and been the cinematographer of independent films such as Pageant Material and Forgive Us.
Talking about the film, Abhijeet told IANS: “I wanted to make a film focusing on the joy of immigrants. The identity of immigrants is often overlooked. We are a number, an application or a news headline. This film challenges that notion. I want our viewers to feel the humanity and hope of the people behind the immigrant surname.
Mysore Magic presents the true story of how Abhijeet’s parents met at a disco competition in India in 1982. The film stars Aishwarya Sonar, Siddharth Kusuma, Saman Haasan and Hrishik Patel in lead roles.
Aishwarya said: I had known about the amazing work of Abhijeet and Alex at Pineapple Cut Pictures for a while, so I was very excited to work with them, especially on a true story. It was an honour, pleasure and a great responsibility to portray Abhijeet’s mother Premi who is an outspoken, uncompromising and outspoken woman. But working with Abhijeet and the team was special. And we got a chance to disco.
Abhijeet’s production house, Pineapple Cut Pictures, has won the Southeast Emmy Awards in 2019.
