Mukul Rohatgi: Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi on Sunday said he has rejected the Centre’s proposal to become the next Attorney General of India. Mukul Rohatgi said that there is no specific reason behind his decision. The Center had earlier this month offered Rohatgi to replace current Attorney General KK Venugopal (91). Venugopal’s term will end on September 30.
Rohatgi was the Attorney General for so long
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017. Venugopal was appointed to the post in July 2017 after him. He was re-appointed for three months to the post of the country’s top law officer on June 29. Union Law Ministry officials said Venugopal had expressed his reluctance due to “personal reasons”, but he had acceded to the government’s request to continue in the post till September 30.
Attorney General has a tenure of three years
Venugopal’s first term as Attorney General was to end in 2020 and he had requested the government to relieve him of responsibilities keeping in mind his age. But he later accepted a new one-year term as the government wanted him to remain in the position keeping in mind that he has been advocating in high-profile cases and has long experience in the bar.
Normally the Attorney General has a three-year term. Senior advocate Rohatgi has also appeared in several high-profile cases in the Supreme Court and various High Courts.
