India’s first transgender judge Joyita Mondal on Friday stressed the need for reservation for the third gender so that transgenders can get government job benefits. At the same time, he urged the government to provide more facilities with reservation for the social upliftment of the transgender community.
There should be transgender development board
He said that the government needs to run awareness programs for the transgender community. Also, there should be a Transgender Development Board in every state so that decisions can be taken for their upliftment. Though transgenders have been given legal status and recognition, they have not got much opportunities at a large scale. It is necessary for them to insist on reservation for government jobs.
Legalizing gay marriage is very important
Along with this, Joyita Mondal also insisted on legalizing same-sex marriage and allowing adoption of children by transgenders. He said that legalizing same-sex marriage is very important. After fighting all the stigma, one gets the (gender change) surgery done only when they have no one left to support them. That’s why it’s so important to earn the right to marry and have a partner. Further said that we (transgender) should have the right to adopt children.
we want facilities with others
Further, Justice Joyita Mondal noted that even after so many years, transgenders do not have access to basic facilities like schools and hospitals. We do not want separate facilities for ourselves, because it will further isolate us. We want facilities with others. Mandal also stressed on the need for reservation for transgenders and said that it is very important to give reservation to this community so that they too can get a chance to avail better opportunities.
