Durga Puja in West Bengal It’s a boom. Durga Puja pandals have been erected at different places in the capital Kolkata, but a statue of Maa Durga erected at one place in south-east Kolkata created a controversy on the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation on Sunday. Here Mahatma Gandhi is shown in the form of Mahishasur with the idol of Maa Durga. The purported picture of the Durga idol was tweeted by a journalist, but he later deleted the post. The journalist said that the police asked him to remove the post as it could create tension during the festival.
PTI does not independently verify the authenticity of the photo shared on Twitter. It has been claimed that the disputed Durga idol is from a pandal in south-east Kolkata.
Alt News Senior Editor Indradeep Bhattacharya said in his latest post that “@Kolkata Police Cyber Cell @DCCyberKP has requested me to delete my tweet related to the picture of a particular puja pandal in Kolkata as they think it is a festival celebration. may create tension between
He said a police officer informed him that the matter was being investigated. At the same time, political parties like Trinamool Congress and BJP condemned the alleged portrayal of Gandhi as Mahishasura. State spokesperson of the ruling Trinamool Congress, Kunal Ghosh, said if it was actually done, it was nothing but sacrilege.
Ghosh said that “It is an insult to the Father of the Nation. It is an insult to every citizen of the country. What will the BJP say about such an insult? We know from which ideological camp Gandhiji’s killer was.” However, the West Bengal BJP has also condemned such a pattern.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar told reporters that “if such a step has been taken, it is unfortunate. We condemn it. It is rude and degrading.”
It is worth noting that every year many puja organizers choose a theme. It mainly consists of social issues and uses pandals, statues and lighting to display it. And there may be times when the traditional Mahishasura may have been replaced by something else, which represents a social evil.
