New rule on fake news: Central Government has increased the powers of PIB. Now she will fight against fake news.
Stopping fake news is a big challenge for the government, under which it approved some new rules on Thursday. In such a situation, now the powers of PIB i.e. Press Information Bureau have been increased. Along with this, new guidelines were issued for media houses or social media platforms.
According to the IT Ministry, if PIB declares any news or post as fake news. So she will send her information to the concerned institution, so that she can be removed with immediate effect. PIB can also instruct platforms like Facebook, Twitter in this regard, so that wrong content can be removed.
According to the ministry, this change has been made in the IT Rules, 2021 through the Information Technology Amendment Rules 2023. Its notification was issued on 6 April 2023, so from now on these new rules have come into force completely.
In the matter, Minister of State for IT and Electronics Rajiv Chandrasekhar said that the government wants to make it clear that it is not its intention to censor the media. The goal of this rule is to stop someone spreading false information. All necessary steps are being taken for this.
He told that at present there is no fact check unit in PIB, but now there is a need to set it up. She will investigate fake news on news channels, websites and social media. The minister said that the accountability of that unit would be fixed.
According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, PIB asked any organization or platform to remove fake news, but if it did not do so, it would lose its ‘safe harbor immunity’. This guarantees the platform protection against fake content posted by users. He said that it will be like before, just this is a sincere effort by the government to curb fake news.
