MirpurMehidy Hasan Miraj’s heroics for the second successive match despite a valiant innings from injured Rohit Sharma eventually proved to be the undoing of India as Bangladesh registered a thrilling five-run win in the second ODI here on Wednesday to level the three-match series. Took an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Bangladesh, deciding to bat first, made a strong score of 271 runs for seven wickets. He lost six wickets for 69 runs in the 19th over, after which Mehidy Hasan scored an unbeaten 100 off 83 balls with eight fours and four sixes, besides sharing a seventh-wicket stand with Mahmudullah (77 off 96 balls, seven fours). He decorated the innings by sharing a 148-run partnership. This is the highest partnership for the seventh wicket against India.

The Indian top-order, crippled by Rohit’s injury, faltered again in front of a challenging target. India’s score was 65 for four at one time, after which Shreyas Iyer (82 off 102 balls, six fours, three sixes) and Akshar Patel (56 off 56 balls, two fours, three sixes) put on 107 for the fifth wicket. Akshar hit Nasum for a six and then completed his second half-century of his ODI career, but Ibadat Hossain dealt a blow to India by dismissing him. Rohit came out to bat at number nine despite his hand being bandaged. He was accompanied at the other end by Deepak Chahar (11), who could only bowl three overs in Bangladesh’s innings due to a hamstring injury.
Rohit made the match exciting by hitting two sixes each on Ibadat Hussain and Mahmudullah. Earlier, Bangladesh’s innings revolved around the hero of the previous match, Mehidy Hasan. Apart from playing an important partnership with Mahmudullah, he also shared an unbroken 23-ball 54-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Nasum Ahmed (18 not out in 11 balls). Bangladesh team managed to add 102 runs in the last 10 overs while batting fast. Washington Sundar was the most successful bowler for India, taking three wickets for 37 runs.
Umran Malik and Mohammad Siraj also took two wickets each for 58 and 73 runs respectively. Bangladesh, who won the toss and decided to bat first, lost the wicket of Anamul Haque (11) in the second over itself, which was trapped leg before by Siraj. Rohit dropped Anamul’s catch a ball before this and his thumb started bleeding due to injury, which prevented him from fielding further in the innings. Umran troubled Shakib Al Hasan in his first over and then bowled Nazmul on the first ball of the next over. Washington then broke the backbone of Bangladesh’s middle order with three quick blows. Shakib (08) lofted the ball up in the air and Dhawan ran through the slips to fine leg to take the catch. Washington dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim (12) and Afif Hossain (00) in successive balls to reduce Bangladesh to 69 for six.
Mehidy Hasan and Mahmudullah then kept the Indian bowlers bereft of success for more than 27 overs, hitting shots all around the wicket. Umran broke the partnership by getting Mahmudullah caught by wicketkeeper Lokesh Rahul on the first ball of the 47th over.
Miraj added 16 runs in the last over of the innings off Shardul Thakur, including two sixes, and completed his first career century with a single off the last ball. He is only the second batsman to score a century in ODIs batting at number eight or lower. The third ODI will be played in Chittagong on Saturday.
