The visiting team won the toss and decided to bat first. At the same time, Usman Khawaja (81 runs) and Peter Handscomb (72 not out) scored half-centuries from Australia.
For India, fast bowler Mohammed Shami took four wickets while spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each. Apart from Khawaja and Handscomb, captain Pat Cummins contributed 33 runs for Australia.
