Ian Healy slams selectors for not considering Steve Smith as white-ball opener

Sydney: Legendary Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has slammed the national selectors for not handing over Steve Smith as the opener in white-ball cricket. Smith, 33, scored 328 runs in four innings for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

Healy said it was difficult to ignore Smith’s achievements as an opening batsman. He compared Smith to Don Bradman and said he was a delight to watch batting. Asked if he would like to see Smith as an opener in T20s, he said, “Of course, why not.”

He said, “Who opened the innings in the T20 World Cup with David Warner?” Aaron Finch was the captain. Both Warner and Finch are not in the old form. I think Smith can open the innings.”

Healy (Ian Healy) said, “I think he can be started in the ODI World Cup to be held in India. It is a pleasure to watch him bat and see how hard other teams have to work to get him out. There is a huge difference between him and the rest. Just like Bradman.” (agency)
