Till now there was no strict guideline like censor board for OTT but now before releasing any content on OTT it will be necessary to follow some rules. Smoking is injurious to our health. Millions of people lose their lives every year due to smoking. To make people aware of this, every year on 31st May, Tobacco Prohibition Day is celebrated all over the world. You must have seen a warning written at the bottom of the screen in any theaters or TV at the beginning of the film or in any smoking scene, in which it is advised not to smoke. Along with this, this warning is also written on the packets of tobacco etc. But earlier this warning was seen only in theaters and TV. But today, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Union Health Ministry has issued new rules for anti-tobacco warnings on OTT platforms and ordered them to be strictly followed.

New rule for OTT platform

According to the rules issued by the Union Health Ministry for OTT, it is mandatory for OTT platforms to display anti-tobacco warning messages in the content. The notification states that if online content publishers do not comply with the new rules, the Union Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will take strict action against them. Now this rule has also been compulsorily implemented on OTT platforms like Hotstar, Amazon Prime, Sony Liv, Netflix, Zee5.

Will have to give 20 seconds disclaimer

OTT platforms have become so popular these days that people of every age group are connected to it. In this case, smoking or tobacco scenes can affect the minor. In such a situation, it is necessary to issue anti-smoking warnings. According to reports, an audio-visual disclaimer of at least 20 seconds on the ill-effects of tobacco use will also be shown at the beginning of the programme. The notification states that, “The anti-tobacco health warning message shall display the warning ‘tobacco causes cancer’ or ‘tobacco kills’ in black letters on a white background.” Further, the anti-tobacco health warning message And the audio-visual disclaimer should be in the same language as that used in the film created online.
