India’s poverty alleviation efforts were lauded in the new Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released on Monday by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). According to this, during the years 2005-06 to 2019-21, 415 crore people in India were able to get out of poverty.
‘India’s case deserves to be studied’
In the MPI report, this success has been described as a better effort towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. “This shows that it is possible to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of halving the number of poor by 2030 in a big way,” the report says. Giving details of this report in a press release, the United Nations said that during these 15 years in India, the lifting of about 415 million people out of the clutches of multidimensional poverty is a historic change.

It is about eliminating poverty completely and halving the number of all men, women and children living in poverty by 2030.” Is.” The report says that according to the population figures of India in the year 2020, the number of poor at 2289 million is the highest in the world.
97 million children in India were in the clutches of poverty
Nigeria ranks second in this list after India with 9.67 million poor. According to this, “Despite the tremendous success, it is a challenging task to bring these 22.89 crore poor people out of poverty in 2019-21. We also have to keep in mind that this number has definitely increased after the data is collected. ” It is worth noting that in 2019-21, 97 million children in India were in the clutches of poverty, which is more than the total number of poor present in any other country.
Yet a multi-faceted policy approach suggests that integrated interventions can improve the lives of millions of people. However, the report states that despite all efforts, India’s population remains vulnerable to the ill effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising food and fuel prices. It has also been advocated to give priority to integrated policies to deal with nutritious food and energy prices. It said that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on poverty has not been fully assessed. The reason for this is 71 percent of the figures of 2019-2021 related to the Population and Health Survey, before the epidemic. According to this report, a total of 1.2 billion people in 111 countries of the world, or 19.1 percent of the population, are living a life of poverty in different dimensions. Even half of these people i.e. 59.3 crores are of children only.

During the year 2005-06 to 2015-16, while 27.5 crore people came out of poverty, between 2015-16 and 2019-21, 14 crore people were successful in coming out of poverty. If we talk about regional poverty, the number of net poor in India’s Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh has declined sharply during 2015-16 to 2019-21. At the same time, the proportion of poor is 21.2 percent in rural areas, while this ratio is 5.5 percent in urban areas. About 90 percent of the total poor people are from rural areas.
