Ukraine has joined Spain and Portugal to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. According to Sky Sports, the Spanish Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed this new partnership during a press conference at the Swiss headquarters of UEFA (Federation of European Football Federations).

A decision on this version of FIFA will be taken at the 2024 FIFA Congress, with more than 200 FIFA member associations involved in voting for it. By 2030, the World Cup will have expanded, adding 16 more teams to make it a 48-team tournament.

Following this year’s World Cup in Qatar, the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the World Cup in 2026 for the first time in a 48-team format. The 2024 European Championships are scheduled to be held in Germany, but the hosts for the 2028 edition of the tournament are yet to be decided.

Ukraine co-hosted the 2012 European Championship at four stadiums in Donetsk and Kharkiv. These cities in eastern Ukraine have been under constant attack and bombing since Russia invaded the country earlier this year. At the same time, the last World Cup was held in Brazil in 2014. Also this year Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece could also come together to co-host.

Saudi Arabia has built a better relationship with FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino in recent years. It can claim joint multi-continental hosting with countries like Egypt and Greece.
