Cape Town: South African limited-overs specialist and former T20 International captain Farhan Behardien announced his retirement from professional cricket on Tuesday. The 39-year-old played 59 ODIs and 38 T20 Internationals. He also captained South Africa in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2017. Behardene announced his decision to retire via social media.
The all-rounder said the decision to quit professional cricket after playing for over 18 years was a difficult one. The last few weeks were especially difficult for him, thinking about this decision. He has scored 1074 runs in ODIs and 518 runs in T20 Internationals. However, his record in domestic cricket has been impressive. Behardene made his first-class debut in 2004 and scored over 7,000 runs in 125 matches, with a top score of 150 not out. He had to wait for eight years to make his debut for the national team.

He was a member of the South African squad that participated in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups. Along with this, he was a part of the ODI World Cup in 2015. Behardeen wrote, “18 years have come and gone. I played 97 matches for the country. I have the experience of playing 17 trophies and four World Cups and 560 professional matches. He last represented South Africa in a T20 International against Australia in Carrara in November 2018. (agency)
