Bilawal Accuses Supreme Court of Contempt: It is generally heard that a person, or a government, or an institution has defied the order of the court, after which a Contempt of Court case is filed against him.
But, a different game is going on in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Wednesday claimed that recent Supreme Court rulings amounted to “contempt” of Parliament and urged Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had recently ordered that assembly elections should be held in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the month of May and for this the central government should release money to the Election Commission. But, by bringing a resolution in the Pakistani Parliament, the Shahbaz government has overturned the decision of the Supreme Court.
After which the Supreme Court of Pakistan said that ‘it is necessary to hold elections within the stipulated time for the protection and strengthening of democracy’. After which Bilawal Bhutto said that this comment of the Supreme Court is tantamount to “disobeying” the MPs who have already voted against the decision to hold elections.
Bilawal Bhutto, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party, insisted in the National Assembly that the decisions of the Parliament could not be ignored. “If Parliament allows the release of funds, we have no objection,” he said.
Will Bilawal take action against the Supreme Court?
Bilawal Bhutto, speaking in the National Assembly, said that “the executive is bound to obey the decisions of the Parliament, and the decision of the Supreme Court is contrary to the basic principle of democracy and the Constitution”. “Parliament has the power to decide how public money can be spent and where it can be spent,” he said.
He said, that “no one can be allowed to breach the privilege of Parliament”. Bilawal Bhutto urged the Speaker of the National Assembly to refer the matter of the “outrageous order to the Committee of Privileges against the Supreme Court”.
Bilawal further said, “Insulting the Prime Minister is an insult to all members of the National Assembly. No institution will be allowed to insult the Prime Minister of the country”. After the attitude of Bilawal Bhutto, questions are being raised whether the Government of Pakistan will now take action against the Supreme Court of the country? Will the Government of Pakistan take action against the judges of the Supreme Court?
This is a rare case in itself, when in the Parliament of a country, there is a demand for action against the Supreme Court of the country and the remarks of the Supreme Court have been described as an insult to the Prime Minister and MPs of the country.
