Mumbai: Deepak Hooda understands the difficulties of batting at number six in T20 International cricket and has prepared himself for quick fall of wickets in any match as in Sri Lanka (India vs Sri Lanka). The incident happened during India’s two-run victory in the first T20 against India. When Hooda came to the crease, India were in trouble after losing four wickets for 77 runs.

The right-handed batsman then scored 41 runs in 23 balls with the help of four sixes to take India to 162 runs. Hooda was awarded the man of the match for his innings. Asked if he was under pressure when he came out to bat at a crucial stage of the innings, Hooda said, “It was very clear in my mind that if we lose wickets early, we will have to build a partnership. As a cricketer, you have to be prepared for such situations when you are batting at number six down the order. Quick wickets can fall anytime.”

He said, “(But) I don’t think we lost too many wickets early because we were in a good position. Yes, we lost one or two extra wickets but I think that is the role of a number six or seven batsman (to bat with confidence, whether it is your first match or second). It’s a good win.”

Hooda felt that he had to respect the situation and play accordingly, but the order in which he is batting, he will have to play the role of a good finisher most of the time. Hooda said in the press conference after the match, “The kind of wicket you get, you have to play accordingly. You have to give a good score to the team and that was going through my mind as a batsman. As a number six batsman, you have to finish the match. So that’s all that was going through my mind.”

Hooda said that after the spinners troubled the top and middle-order batsmen, he was able to play freely as Wanindu Hasaranga almost completed his quota of overs and the wicket became easy. “Initially it was not possible to hit the ball hard considering the conditions but it was his (Hasaranga) last over and then he bowled a loose ball as well. In a T20 match, you have to have the intent to hit the ball. If you get the ball in the right places, you have to play big shots. I think it was the right time for my game and partner Akshar Patel and thankfully we executed it well” The aggressive all-rounder also admitted that the hosts could have scored a few more runs.

Hooda (Deepak Hooda) said, “The (team) meeting has not happened but we definitely scored 10 to 12 runs short. However, we got a good score in the end.” (agency)
