The next president of Congress will be from non-Gandhi family and from South India. Karnataka’s veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge is set to become the new party president. However, he will face MP Shashi Tharoor in the elections. The leaders of G-23 have also supported Kharge, who suddenly joined the race for the post.
Kharge filed three sets of nominations, in which these angry leaders and till a day earlier, 30 senior leaders including the presidential contenders Digvijay Singh and Ashok Gehlot have become his proposers. The political drama continued till Friday, the last day of nominations.
Kharge, a confidant of the Gandhi family for five decades, reached Sonia Gandhi’s house before 11 am, went straight to the party headquarters and filled the presidential form. Before him, Tharoor had left with a form. Former Jharkhand minister KN Tripathi has also filled the form, but his claim is not being considered serious.
I am fighting for a big change in the party. I urge everyone to vote. Thanks also to the senior leaders who supported me from all the states. -Mallikarjun Kharge
true to trust
After the rebellion of Gehlot supporters, the Dalit leader Kharge came true to the trust of the Gandhi family. However, the Congress maintains that there is no official candidate in the election. Sonia Gandhi has already described herself as neutral.
But, it was certain that no one would be able to become the president without the support of the family. That is why the question of one person-one post did not even arise before the nomination. The way Kharge got the support of the leaders of G-23, he has further strengthened the first ladder of confidence.
Digvijay retreated as soon as Kharge’s name came up. Said- I can’t even dream of contesting elections against him. As such, the election is now a mere formality. However, the official announcement of the new chairman will be on October 19.
Kharge Bhishma Pitamah
Kharge is Bhishma Pitamah. I have full respect for him but I will put my thoughts first. I am contesting the election of the president for change in the party. This election is a friendly competition. Shashi Tharoor (during the filing of the form)
Controversy as soon as the form is filled: Wrong map in Tharoor’s manifesto
Senior leader Shashi Tharoor was embroiled in controversies as soon as he filed his nomination for the Congress National President. Tharoor released his manifesto soon after the nomination in which he showed a fragmented map of India. In this map some part of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are not shown as part of India. Tharoor has talked about decentralization of the organization in the manifesto.
Tharoor, however, rectified the mistake as soon as he came to know and re-issued the manifesto with the correct map. This is not the first time that a Lok Sabha MP has released a fragmented map of India. Earlier in 2019, Tharoor had tweeted a fragmented map from which the northernmost region of the country was missing. In December 2019, he shared the cover of a booklet about the Kerala Congress’s protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Later, correcting his mistake, he deleted the tweet.
Will ‘one person-one post’ also apply to Kharge?
Will it apply to one person one post kharge also? Under this formula, Ashok Gehlot was asked to resign from the chief minister’s post to become the party president. In such a situation, will Kharge, who has filed his nomination, resign from the post of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha?
BJP said, Tharoor kept a fragmented map of India to please the Gandhi family
Attacking the issue of having a fragmented map of India in the manifesto, the BJP said, Shashi Tharoor did this to please the Gandhi family. Amit Malviya said, while Rahul Gandhi is reportedly on a ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’, Tharoor, who is in the fray to become the Congress president, is bent on breaking India. It is possible that he feels that this may help in favoring the Gandhi family. BJP national spokesperson RP Singh said, this is not a mistake but the policy of Congress regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
