New Delhi: The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to introduce an ‘Impact Player’ system in its attempt to provide strategic flexibility to the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. Under this rule, the captain can include a substitute player in the team in place of any player from the playing XI during the match. The BCCI had trialled the system during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in October and the state teams welcomed the move.
According to sources familiar with the development, the IPL Governing Committee (GC) discussed the matter on Thursday evening. The franchise has already been informed about the ‘Impact Player’. “The matter was discussed in the IPL GC meeting and the BCCI will share the details soon,” a source from an IPL franchise said on condition of anonymity.

The exact details of the rules related to this are awaited but it is believed that the playing rules followed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be adopted. Under the ‘Impact Player’ rule a team may have up to four pre-determined substitute players, who may be characterized as ‘strategic substitutions’. Any one of them can be used in a match.
Any such substitution shall, however, be made before the 14th over of the innings. Under this, a player joining the team as an ‘Impact Player’ will be able to bowl his full quota or bat as a new batsman. (agency)
