Assam Rifles succeeds on Mizoram-Myanmar border
Assam Rifles personnel on Wednesday seized a large cache of arms and warlike items being taken to Myanmar from Mizoram’s Siaha district and arrested seven people, including five Myanmarese nationals. Defense spokesman Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said that the recovered items included air guns, air gun pellets, combat uniforms, radio sets, tactical vests, tactical gloves and shoes worth about Rs 16 lakh. Five Myanmarese and two Indian nationals were also arrested in connection with the seizure.

Lt Col Rawat said the stores recovered were of military grade. Hence their use by Myanmar-based insurgents for anti-national activities cannot be ruled out. Acting on a tip-off, the Assam Rifles personnel of Siaha outpost along with Mizoram Police launched an operation near Niavathlang village and intercepted two vehicles carrying the confiscated goods, he said.

The Assam Rifles had specific information about the movement of tactical and war-like stores for insurgents based in Myanmar in two SUMO vehicles, the spokesman said. The arrested accused and the confiscated items have been handed over to Siaha Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings. An official statement said, this operation is a big blow to all the anti-national activists. The success of the operation will establish peace and harmony along the Indo-Myanmar border. Mizoram has an unfenced border of 510 km with Myanmar, where information about smuggling of various drugs, arms and ammunition, gold, exotic animals, various tobacco products and many other banned substances has always come to the fore.
