AIIMS New Director: M. Srinivas, Dean of Hyderabad-based ESIC Hospital and Medical College, has been appointed as the new Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The Department of Personnel and Training has issued an order in this regard on Friday. Dr. Srinivas will succeed Dr. Randeep Guleria who is the Director of AIIMS, Delhi since March 2017. Dr. Srinivas was Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery (Children’s Surgery) at AIIMS, Delhi before moving to ESIC Hospital and Medical College, Hyderabad in 2016.
Dr Guleria’s tenure extended twice
The order issued by the department said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. Srinivas as the Director of AIIMS, New Delhi. According to the order, “This appointment is effective for five years from the day he assumes office or till he attains the age of 65 years or till further orders, whichever is earlier.” The initial order in this regard was issued on September 9. But the government issued a new order on 23 September, changing the date. The order said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the “extension of Dr. Randeep Guleria as the Director of AIIMS, New Delhi with effect from March 25, 2022 for six months or till the appointment of the next Director, whichever is earlier.” The period of extension for the second time in the tenure of Dr Guleria as the Director of AIIMS ends on 23 September. He was appointed as the Director of AIIMS, Delhi on March 28, 2017 for five years, but later his tenure was extended twice for three months each.
These were the names ahead for the new director of AIIMS
Earlier in March, three names were sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for appointment as the new directors of AIIMS. Nikhil Tandon, Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Rajesh Malhotra, Head of the AIIMS Trauma Center and Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Pramod Garg, Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, AIIMS. These three names were included in the final list by the search-cum-selection committee, which was approved by the institute body, the apex decision making committee in the context of AIIMS and sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Appointments Committee asked for a long list with more names on June 20 for appointment to the post of Director in AIIMS, Delhi. After this, the names of MV Padma Shrivastava, Head of Neuroscience Center, Dr. Balram Bhargava, former Director General of ICMR and Dr. Rakesh Agrawal, Director, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry, were discussed.
Later, a search-cum-selection committee headed by the Health Secretary included M. Srinivas, Dean of ESIC Hospital and Medical College, Hyderabad and Dr. Sanjay Bihari, Director, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, in the final list. .
How did the name of M. Srinivas come forward?
Sources said, “The names of Dr. Srinivas and Dr. Bihari were placed before the institute body on Wednesday before they were sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a final decision.” Interestingly, among Dr. Srinivas and Dr. Bihari, Dr. No one had applied for appointment to the post of Director of AIIMS, Delhi. Prior to his appointment as the Director of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum in April, 2022, Dr. Bihari was the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Professor at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, Lucknow.
