sylhet: Opener Shefali Verma’s brilliance with bat and ball helped India seal their place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament by defeating hosts Bangladesh by 59 runs here on Saturday. Shefali took two wickets for 10 runs in four overs after scoring 55 runs in 44 balls.

He put on a brilliant partnership of 96 runs in 12 overs for the first wicket with Smriti Mandhana (47 runs in 38 balls), who took over the captaincy after Harmanpreet Kaur was rested. Jemima Rodrigues, running in excellent rhythm, took the team to a big score by playing an unbeaten 35 off 24 balls. Batting first, Bangladesh were restricted to 100 for seven after India scored 159 for five in 20 overs. Apart from Shefali, Player of the Match, Deepti Sharma took two wickets for India while Renuka Singh and Sneh Rana took one wicket each.

With this win, India cemented their place in the semi-finals with one match remaining in the league stage. India has eight points from four wins in five matches. The Indian team, which had lost the previous match against Pakistan, took an aggressive approach from the beginning of this match and kept its hold strong throughout the match. Bangladesh have never achieved a target of more than 142 runs in their T20 International career.

The team’s batsmen tried to score fast runs in this match but they did not look comfortable in front of the accurate bowling of Indian bowlers. After a poor fielding performance against Pakistan, the Indian players raised their bar in this match as Bangladesh batsmen struggled to steal the runs. Fargana Haque (30 off 40 balls) and Murshida Khatoon (25 off 21 balls) got Bangladesh off to a decent start but both could add just 45 runs in nine overs. After the break of this partnership, the team kept on losing wickets at frequent intervals.

Earlier, Shefali showed why she is considered one of the most aggressive batsmen in this format. He hit five fours and two sixes as he completed his fourth fifty in the T20 International format. Shefali also completed 1000 runs in the shorter format of the game during this period.

During this, Mandhana also played the captaincy innings. He hit six fours before being run out. After the dismissal of these two, Bangladesh bowlers got a chance to return to the match, but Jemima scored fast and took the team to a big score. She added 29 runs in 2.3 overs with Deepti (10 runs in five balls).
