Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Chief Operating Officer (COO) N Ganapathy Subramaniam has said that action against an employee for ‘moonlighting’ i.e. working with a job for another organization can ruin his/her career and hence, this It is important to show empathy when dealing with the issue. When an employee works independently in addition to his regular job, it is technically called ‘moonlighting’.
Amidst the debate over ‘moonlighting’, Subramaniam told PTI that no one can stop the company from taking action against the employees on moonlighting. He said the action is a part of the service agreement but young employees have to stop it. Subramaniam said that taking action would result in ruining the career of the employee. This way the employee will fail the background check for the next job in the future. So we have to show some sympathy.
He added that the company treats an employee like being part of the family and will focus on preventing the family member from wandering off given the consequences of any action. It is worth mentioning that in the last few months, amidst increasing demand for talent, there have been cases of catching jobs along with other jobs in the IT industry of more than $ 220 billion.
Many companies like TCS have expressed concern about this while Wipro has also suspended 300 employees. At the same time, companies like Tech Mahindra have shown a soft stance on ‘moonlighting’. The TCS COO said some IT companies work on a model where ‘freelancing’ of employees is okay. But companies like TCS, which works with top global corporations, cannot allow activities like ‘moonlighting’ to continue because customer data must be protected.
TCS COO said that we do not want to penalize young employees for violating value systems. TCS employs over six lakh employees and has hired 1.35 lakh freshers in the last 18 months. Subramaniam emphasized that the company has a long-standing commitment to its employees and our relationship is mutual.
Asked about the salary package for entry-level employees at the same level over the years, Subramaniam said the company believes that this package is sufficient for young joiners. He said that after clearing a few tests, he has the potential to double his earnings within a year.
He said that after hiring an employee, the company invests in their training for more than six months and only then puts the employee on a project. He said that in the last few years around 20-30 per cent of the employees have passed the exam and have been able to double their salary.
Subramaniam also linked the issue of ‘moonlighting’ to work from home (WFH), pointing out that a lot of concerns are taken care of when an employee is in office. He said that an employee can learn from the mentorship available in the office and it helps him to acquire a higher level of skills, which is not possible while working from home.
