The Indo-Bangladesh border area has been notorious for animal smuggling. From the areas of BOP Panitar, Dobila, Gowardha, Ghojadanga and Kaijuri in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal till a few years ago, there was a variety of smuggling from cattle. This district comes under the Border Security Force (BSF). The picture of the area once infamous for smuggling is now slowly changing. Now smuggling has almost stopped here.
Many youths have changed their path and are carving their future by joining the mainstream. All this was made possible due to Jawahar Singh Negi, Commandant of 153rd Battalion under the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier with a brilliant and visionary mind. Negi originally hails from Jhutaya village of Kalsi Tehsil in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, who took over the command of this battalion in March, 2019. On hearing Negi’s name, smugglers tremble at the border. Official figures show that animal smuggling in the region has now completely stopped.
Now services will be given in Kashmir
According to Commandant Negi, in the last two-and-a-half years since the responsibility of this battalion, no case of cattle smuggling has been reported from about 35 km border area. Commandant Negi, who moved ahead with efficient leadership ability and visionary thinking, has now been transferred to Jammu and Kashmir. Negi, who headed the 153rd Battalion for nearly three years and six months, has handed over his charge to the newly appointed Commandant. Negi will now serve at the Sector Headquarters of BSF in Rajouri.
Negi has received many awards for better border management
Negi has also received many awards for zero cattle smuggling and crime rate control and better border management in the area of 153rd Corps. This includes BSF Director General Citation to many IG Citations. Negi gives all the credit to the hard work of the soldiers and officers. Negi started a campaign against the smugglers as soon as he arrived. With the arrest of a large number of smugglers, many notorious smugglers were released to the area. The smugglers now tremble when they hear his name. For the first time in April this year, a notorious smuggler of the area even surrendered before the BSF.
It is worth mentioning that Commandant Negi also took the initiative of free coaching to shape the future of the youth and children living in the border area. 153 Battalion arranged free coaching for various competitive examinations at border out posts only. With the inspiration of Commandant Negi, a large number of youths involved in illegal activities are preparing for competitive examinations today and hundreds of youth have been benefitted.
