CAVITE CITY: The local government led by Mayor Denver Chua signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the Corregidor Foundation on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, for the redevelopment of the historic island.
The MoA will launch the redevelopment of the historical islet 37 kilometers or 19.9784 (nautical miles) away from the city proper in Samonte Park, Cavite City.
“One of our plans is to rehaul the island and properly preserve its historical relics to expand the tourism of our city,” Chua said.
Chua together with Cynthia Carreon, chairman of Corregidor Foundation Inc.; Rowena Bautista, officer in charge and department manager Corregidor Foundation Inc.; and Abraham Urubio, city administrator of the locality, signed an agreement that includes having an office and being part of the development of Corregidor Island.
“We are excited for you to see the beauty of Corregidor Island and I believe that little by little our city will be recognized and our economy will be restored to being first class,” Chua added.
Corregidor Island is one of the five most visited historic sites in the province even though it is far from the city proper and still needs a boat to get there. It is estimated that it can provide high tourism income when it is properly promoted and restored.
“For a long time, it was not utilized by our city government and it seems that Cavite City was neglected and did not even participate in the development of this beautiful island,” Chua lamented.
Corregidor Island’s strategic location for centuries had been fortified with coastal artillery proven worthy during World War 2.
